THICKENING

Picture
Traditionally used to reduce the amount of liquid in the digestion phase of the plant, thickening can be accomplished either through gravity style thickening tanks or mechanical means.  Thickening tanks typically are larger and require more footprint, however they do not require buildings and yield polymer savings to achieve their ends.  Gravity thickeners are more functional on primary solids than secondary.  Mechanical thickening is usually done with either a rotary drum, gravity belt, DAF or centrifuge but a good three belt press can dual function as a thickening device by utilizing the gravity deck portion of the press and an earlier take off point.  This can offer substantial saving if a facility can combine thickening and dewatering in one unit.

Mechanical Thickening

The Gravity Belt Thickener is used to thicken sludge prior to centrifuge or digestion processes.  A mix of primary or secondary sludge can easily be thickened to +7% wt, pure secondary to over 5%.

Features:

  • High unit capacity per floor space
  • Low residence time eliminates
    septicity and float scum
  • Superior thickening
  • Low maintenance, easy operation, reliable

Rotary Drum Thickener (Concentrator)

The Rotary Concentrator is an alternative to the GBT for thickening that requires less floor space and less operator attention.

Features:

  • Lower cost
  • Simpler operation;
    no belt tracking or tensioning
  • Smaller floor space

3DP 3 Belt Press (combination thickening / dewatering)

The belt press has been the equipment of choice for municipal sludge dewatering since its inception in the early 1970's.  The Model 3DP has features offered by no other manufacturer.

Features:

  • Paddle wheel feed box that provides very uniform slurry distribution with no clogging.
  • Independent filter belt in gravity zone
  • Curved wedge zone that puts pressure on cake through the entire zone.
  • Vertical pressure zone eliminates filtrate pooling/rewetting
  • Observe gravity zone without platform
  • Very high discharge cake solids
  • Low energy requirement
  • Low maintenance, easy operation, reliable
  • Tubular steel hot dipped galvanized frame that is easy to keep clean.

Gravity Thickening

Gravity thickeners is essentially a type of clarifier and relies on the density of solids to settle and thicken the sludge.  They consist of a circular tank with a sludge collection system at the bottom.  They are typically center fed with a discharge weir and have a collection system that sweeps the solids to a center well for removal in the center sludge hopper and pipe.
